The Ferry Plaza farmers market

This was the first time that I had been to the farmers market in San Francisco and it was well worth the effort.  It is situated at the end of Market street in and around the historic ferry building. I expected this market to be quite big, as California is a large producer of fresh produce, and I was not disappointed.


The fresh fruits and vegetables were plentiful and of a good quality including some of the most beautiful radicchio I have every seen.

Along with the fresh produce there were stalls selling locally produced cheese and baked goods.  We decided that since we were going to Greens for a big lunch that we would pick up some food at the market for a picnic in our hotel room for dinner.


We picked up some delicious cheese made from a mixture of goat and cows milk from Achadinha Cheese Company. To go with this we bought some wonderful bread from Acme bakery which was situated inside the Ferry Building.


They had an amazing selection of different bread and since I was unable to choose just one, I picked 4 rolls each one different.

Visiting a farmers market when you travel gives some insight to the local produce. In San Antonio there was a lot of pecans black eyed peas, here there was a very wide range of different produce but the item that I would not find at a farmers market in Canada was oranges!


So we had to pick up a few mandarin oranges to snack on. The full market is every Saturday morning and it is well worth a trip.  There are also quite a few stalls selling hot food, and on a beautiful sunny day like when we were there, it would have been a good destination for lunch.

  1. When we were there in September a couple of years ago we also picked up cheese and bread from the market and had a picnic lunch in the sun. For dessert we had fresh peaches and figs! Everything is so beautiful at the market.
